On turning points in artistic practice
Under the title *Het kan ook anders* (‘There’s Another Way’), *BK-informatie*—a trade journal for visual artists—has been releasing a second podcast series since October 1, 2025.
Life events provide artists with inspiration for their work. What happens when an event is so impactful that it transforms the work itself? How does an artist give shape to such a process of change? What must be let go? And how does one deal with the uncertainty or the resulting chaos?
A new episode of the podcast is released every Wednesday afternoon. Across 52 episodes, artists discuss the turning points in their careers as visual artists—turning points triggered by a wide variety of events, such as a studio fire, a new course of study, or acute or chronic health issues.
Through these diverse stories, listeners gain an increasingly clear picture of how profound events shape the lives and work of visual artists—for whom life and work are deeply intertwined.

Esther Didden is in Meppel, visiting Tienke Zijlstra’s studio. She became a mother at a young age, got married, and decided to enroll in the art education program at the art academy. She had another child with her partner, but the marriage did not last. As a single mother, financial security was important, so she began teaching at a secondary school. However, after ten years, she could no longer sustain it and resigned. She wanted to create art. That was a major leap into the unknown, as she had already been ill for quite some time. It started with an autoimmune disease, followed by endometriosis, and for the past year, she has also had alopecia. Her illness taught her to listen to her body, and she now applies that insight to the creation of her work.
