PICTURA Dordrecht – May 13 to June 16, 2023
After years of working with performances, installations, and video art, Geertrui van de Craats rediscovered drawing a few years ago. Her work now largely consists of large-scale drawings. Seeking like-minded artists, she initiated an exhibition at Pictura, focusing on monumental drawing.
The result is “Tekenen GROOT, tussen natuur en cultuur”, a dynamic exhibition where six artists—Tienke Zijlstra, Sigrid van Woudenberg, Monica Aerden, Jeanne Rombouts, Bas Ketelaars, and Geertrui van de Craats—present their monumental drawings. The large-scale drawing takes center stage, showcasing both grand gestures and minute details. The works explore the artists’ relationship with nature and culture. Smaller works and studiesare also displayed in the foyer.
The exhibition will be opened by artist and curator Arno Kramer.
Participating artists:
🔹 Tienke Zijlstra – Lush, fleshy, seemingly untamable forms sprawl across the paper, yet structural elementsreveal the artist’s control. The boundaries of her works are dictated by her own physical reach.
🔹 Jeanne Rombouts – Lines and patches of gray to deep black crawl and shift across the paper, forming landscapes, soil profiles, figures, and torsos, creating an organic network of natural forces and primal bodies.
🔹 Bas Ketelaars – Translates the experience of walking into large, yet highly controlled, layered drawings, sometimes piercing through the paper itself. His work questions: How do we represent nature? Where does culture end and nature begin?
🔹 Sigrid van Woudenberg – Meticulously drawn human figures in Siberian chalk appear carefree, resting in artificial, almost theatrically abstract landscapes, creating a sense of dissonance.
🔹 Monica Aerden – Combines figures from different worlds and eras, interwoven with seemingly casually drawn human and animal figures. Her fabulous, medieval-like universe reflects a fascination with the great game of human, animal, and object rules.
🔹 Geertrui van de Craats – Her large, subdued, and highly detailed horses seem unaware of the silver embellishments and attachments added to them. The horse, as a motif, becomes a symbol of the uneasy relationship between humans and animals, mirroring the artificial world we inhabit.
